The Cambridge Gun and Rod Club is one of America's oldest Black sportsmen's clubs. Camp Monroe is its home along the water, tended to for one hundred and thirty seasons.
A place of refuge, recreation, and community
In 1893 a group of Black and Jewish men in Boston were shut out of the city's hunting and fishing clubs. So they built one of their own — on a lake in Maine. They named it the Cambridge Gun and Rod Club.
By the 1920s the camp drew lawyers, judges, and scholars, becoming a destination for Black families across New England and the Mid-Atlantic. Over the next century it became a sanctuary for members, including W.E.B. Du Bois who returned summer after summer, and Joe Louis as a guest. Today, the historic men's chapter still reunions the first full week of August and this year, the club welcomes a women+ chapter.
